Mahogany is excited to announce our new and upcoming exhibition, FORGED! An exhibit that explores the artistic interpretations of art forms that are molded, formed and shaped.
FORGED is a collection of abstract interpretative paintings, ceramic and clay sculpture works that connect to the Black diaspora.
Connections to the Great Black Migration and the Afro-Latina Diaspora are prevalent in the FORGED exhibition.
FORGED features the works of two Midwest artists. Brad Anthony Bernard is a painter, muralist, and multi-media artist who is an art professor at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and obtained his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Mississippi. He is an award-winning educator and artist. FORGED also features the works of Liz Larue, a sculptor based out of Chicago. Larue's work emphasizes the unique Afro-Latin influences that can be seen in her sculpture work. Larue explores the mediums of clay, of an experienced educator and sculpture who is a fixture on the Chicago arts scene.
About the artists
Brad Bernard
Bernard is an art instructor, an exhibiting artist, community arts advocate, scholar and entrepreneur. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Bernard received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1993. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi in 2003. He has received numerous mural commissions both public and private for churches, schools, and community centers in the Milwaukee area.
Shortly before returning to Milwaukee he was a recipient of the 2017 Mississippi Humanities Council ‘Teacher of the Year’ Award as well as the ‘Commitment to Blues Legacy’ Award from Mississippi Valley State University for his research and mixed media depictions of Hill Country and Delta Blues musicians. Bernard is now a professor at his alma mater, the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where he currently teaches First-Year Experience and New Studio Practice courses while continuing his own artistic endeavor as an exhibiting and public/private commissioned artist.
Liz Larue
Larue is a practicing sculpture artist based out of Chicago. Larue is a ceramic artist specializing in porcelain and stoneware portrait and figurative sculptures.
A retired educator and counselor in the Chicago Public School system, Larue brings a wealth of knowledge and life experiences to her sculpture work. She specializes in clay and ceramics but also explores and incorporates beautiful, exotic woods into her work.
Larue’s identification as a Afro-Latin artist adds new layers and another dimension to her work. She can be found creating and working at the Hyde Park Arts Center in Chicago.
