Mahogany To Honor Artist Woodrow Nash

The Wisconsin Black Art & Culture Expo proudly announces the distinguished sculptor, Woodrow Nash, as the first recipient of the 2024 class of the Legacy In The Arts Award. This esteemed accolade recognizes Nash's unparalleled contribution to American contemporary art. Renowned for his captivating mixed media sculptures, Nash's work will be showcased for the first time in Southeast Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin Parkside in Kenosha and Mahogany Gallery.

Scott Terry, the founder of The Expo and Mahogany Gallery, expresses his enthusiasm, stating, "I am beyond excited to award Woodrow Nash with our annual Legacy In The Arts Award. Nash is an icon in American contemporary art, and the recognition of his stellar art career is long overdue."

Nash’s sculptures transmit human delicacies and inner harmony. Examining the contemporary male and female physique, he explores the body’s natural form and mythology. Incorporating various styles and techniques utilizing stoneware, earthenware, terracotta or porcelain, Nash’s work is fired electronically, pit fired or via a “raku” effect – creating an “African Nouveau” trademark that’s solely his own.

Woodrow Nash's exhibition promises an exploration of his diverse and evocative sculptures, marking a significant cultural event for Southeast Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin Parkside and Mahogany Gallery serve as the distinguished venues for this landmark showcase.

The Wisconsin Black Art and Culture Expo, the largest Black History Month celebration in the state, unfolds over two months with a series of arts and cultural events spanning Racine, Kenosha, and Milwaukee. Organized by Mahogany Gallery and Mahogany Black Arts & Cultural Center in Racine, the Expo continues to be a beacon for promoting and celebrating African American contributions to the arts and culture.
